We want to honour the work and legacy of Constance Lake First Nation’s first ‘language champion’ and role model to all language instructors in the community. She taught Cree in our schools for the past 40 years, developing her own curriculum along the way. Many in our community can recall the Cree songs that she sung. She also mentored many current community language instructors and was an instructor at Lakehead University’s Indigenous Language Instructors program (click here to view).
We want to make the following awards available in her honour:
- One award for in excellence for language in the home.
- One award for excellence in language in the community.
- One award for excellence in language as a band department.
Applicants will be required to complete an application form and we will work with her family on deciding on awards.
We have applied for funding for this program and are still awaiting word on results. More information coming soon.
